Me

For your information...

About Me: My name is Kara and I live near Dayton, OH, where I work for Elsevier as a human factors engineer on a user-centered design team. I love my job.

I was born and raised in Cleveland, OH, and have three younger brothers. My parents and many of my relatives still live in Cleveland, but my brothers and I have spread out all over the United States.

I have dual BAs in archaeology (northern European) and art history (medieval) and a minor in computer science from Cornell University. My Masters degree (MSI) is from the School of Information, the University of Michigan's graduate school of information and library science. Along the way I developed interests in user interface design, coding, and web standards… and that's brought me to where I am today.

I like reading, photography, hiking, biking, travel, my house, my cats, my boyfriend, fencing, my dance classes, working out at the gym, and martinis.

About this site: It is a work in progress, and has been since I started it up back in the dark ages of 2002. Then I was just getting out of grad school, and figured that some sort of an online presence might make the post school job hunt go a little bit smoother. Right now it is mostly a static journal so that the few people who stumble on it or read it on a regular basis (a handful of friends and my parents) can sort of keep up with what I am up to. All things are subject to change on a moment's notice, however...

Photography Equipment: My principle cameras are a Canon XTi and a Canon EOS 300D (Digital Rebel) with a 28-200 mm Promaster lens. (Other lenses for the Canon include a Canon 28-400 telephoto, a Promaster Macro, a Canon Wideangle, and a Lensbaby with macro and wide angle attachments.) I love the Digital Rebel, but I have to admit that it is not always the most convenient camera to haul around with me all of the time. Eventually I will get a smaller, much more portable, digital for day-to-day use. My other (film) cameras include a Calumet 4x5 field camera, Kodak Brownie, Kodak Traveler II, Lomo ActionSampler, and Holga 120N.

When using digital, I primarily in RAW mode. The nice people at the camera store around the corner handle all of my film development, though I may eventually start developing my own black and white film. I do all of my post-processing (digital and film) with Photoshop CS3.
